Theory Decoded: Music Theory for Songwriters

This workshop will cover practical music theory as it applies to songwriters and performers. It will include the following:

Intervals
Scales
Key signatures
Functional chords
Time signatures
Subdivision
Rhythmic feel

Who can benefit from this workshop?

Vocalists and songwriters who don't play an instrument
People who "play by ear" but want to increase their musical understanding of what they do naturally
Songwriters who want to convey their musical ideas to others
Anyone who wants a basic musical toolkit
Some music experience is preferable, however no prior theory knowledge is necessary.

Robin Yukiko is a Berklee College of Music grad, singer-songwriter, pianist, and music educator in San Francisco. She performs regularly and hosts the SF Singer-Songwriters’ Workshop at the Musicians Union Local 6. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, received Honorable Mention for her song "Fool Who Left" in the We Are Listening Singer-Songwriter Awards, and is currently in post-production of her second album, Love War.

Alan Monasch is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and singer who performs both solo and with bands all around the Bay Area. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Humanities with a specialization in music production (2005), he ran sound for a weekly blues jam in Novato and hosted the monthly Nomad Cafe Songwriters’ Showcase in Oakland. His blues song “Going Under, Going Down” earned an honorable mention in the annual West Coast Songwriters International Song Competition. Monasch has studied under Steve Seskin (songwriting) and Caren Armstrong (performance). He has taught functional chord theory since 1965 and has a repertoire of over three hundred original songs.
